    Normal Anatomy

    The thymus is an important organ that is prominently visible as a structure in the anterior mediastinum (fig. 3). The thymus can be visible up until approximately 5 years of age, and partly determines the width of the mediastinum. During puberty, the thymus eventually shrinks, and in comparison with the younger child will be far less prominent and visible.
