Catheters
Catheters can be used for navigation or to inject contrast medium, medications (e.g., chemotherapy, anticoagulants, anesthetics), and embolization materials into the blood vessels. Furthermore, instruments/devices (e.g., stents) can be introduced via catheters.
Catheters come in many types, sizes, and shapes, each with unique properties. Due to the complexity and variability—which is only increasing further—and the anatomical differences between patients, many procedures require specific catheters. Catheters are, therefore, designed for specific procedures and conditions.
For example, flexibility is important if a catheter must be navigated through a problematic curve.
