Discover the world of interventional radiology! This module offers a clear overview of the basic principles, the crucial roles of interventional radiologists, and their growing importance in patient care.

General Procedures: Arterial Access and Closure
Obtaining Arterial Access
The most commonly used site for arterial vascular access is the femoral artery. Because this vessel is relatively large and lies superficially (which is also advantageous for compression), the groin region is attractive. If access to the femoral artery is impossible, for example, due to extensive vascular calcifications, an alternative site must be chosen. A frequently used alternative access route (especially in cardiology) is via the radial artery.
Ultrasound-guided puncture of the artery is now standard. This technique offers several advantages compared to the traditional method of blind puncture (higher success rate, reduced risk of complications, and shorter procedure time).
