Interventional Radiology (Non-Oncological) - Introduction
Are you curious about the procedures an interventional radiologist performs? This module provides a general overview of many frequently performed non-oncological procedures and their indications, techniques, and possible complications. It offers an excellent summary highlighting the essential role of interventional radiology in treating many medical conditions. Think, for example, of treating vascular disorders (e.g., peripheral arterial disease, aneurysms, bleeding), abscess drainage, and various disorders of the kidneys and bile ducts.
This module aims to provide a general overview of the most frequently performed non-oncological procedures. The actual range of procedures is broader, including many oncological treatments. The oncological therapies will be described in a separate module (under construction).

While reading the module, please note that not every procedure is performed in every hospital. In particular, complex radiological interventions require specialized skills/knowledge and often expensive equipment.
Local expertise and the patient population (demand and volume) largely determine which procedures are offered. In some situations, it is more efficient to centralize specific procedures in specialized centers so that a higher volume can be achieved and more experience can be built up. This will ultimately lead to a better outcome for the patient.
Therefore, if you wish to request a specific procedure for a patient, always check with the interventional radiologist regarding the available options.
