    TIPS

The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure is used in the treatment of portal hypertension. In this procedure, a direct connection is created between a hepatic vein and a portal vein branch. This way, a portion of the blood from the portal vein is diverted directly into the hepatic veins, bypassing the (cirrhotic) liver parenchyma. (Result: pressure reduction in the portal vein and the often already present portosystemic collaterals [e.g., esophageal varices]).

There are several techniques available for TIPS placement. The expertise and preference of the interventional radiologist largely determine the choice. Below is an explanation of a commonly used method.
