Diagnostics
In a diagnostic angiography study using X-ray in combination with intravascular contrast medium administration, the anatomy and pathology of the vascular system in the area of interest are directly visualized.
Advantages/value of diagnostic angiography:
- Higher resolution and more vascular system detail than non-invasive imaging techniques such as CTA and MRA. This is particularly important for small vascular structures and complex vascular anomalies.
- Functional assessment. Direct visualization of blood flow can provide more detailed information regarding, for example, the exact degree of stenosis and collateral circulation. This also includes pressure measurements. Additionally, the collection of venous blood samples for biochemical analysis (venous sampling) can provide valuable information about the overall physiological status of the patient.
- Dynamic changes in the vascular bed, such as vasospasm and vessel damage, are well visualized with this real-time imaging (essential in acute interventions).
- The diagnostic study can seamlessly transition into a therapeutic procedure (e.g., performing an angioplasty or stent placement). The immediate treatment means that a second study/procedure is not necessary.
