The basic principles about the hand X-ray examination.

Checklist
The following points may be used as a guide to assess hand X-rays.
- Has everything been imaged?
- Is there soft tissue swelling? Foreign body?
- General impression of the bone; osteoporosis? Ossal lesions?
- Examine all joints. What is their position? Do the joint spaces have equal dimensions everywhere?
- Position of the CMC joints; is there interruption of the zigzag configuration?
- Check the full length of the cortex. Is there an interruption or asymmetry anywhere?
- In the event of fracture; orientation of the fracture line? intra- or extra-articular? extent and position (dislocation/angulation/rotation/shortening)?
- Changes versus previous examinations?
